Did I tell you about my family?  I decided I needed to lose some weight, and after much research I decided to go with the South Beach Diet.  My family, well they have been incredibly somewhat completely useless.  For instance, Spouse — he will never live without carbs, and I believe he thinks that whole grain breads and brown rice are a plot to overthrow the world.  My daughter has been telling me that I need to lose weight for some time now.  Well, the first two weeks of South Beach are basically “sugar free.”  So I’ve told her that we can’t even think about walking down the candy aisle (her favorite) right now.  On day two, as we were at the store, she was telling me how good I look and that I don’t need to diet anymore.  This was repeated later in the week on another trip to the store.  (I didn’t fall for it).

And my son, my own flesh and blood.  Well I must admit he has totally stepped up to the plate on this one.  The other day he told me that he wanted me to be healthy and live a long life ……

so he can borrow money from me when I’m 90.

I mentioned my family in the same breathe as miracles in an earlier post.  Well yep — it’s a MIRACLE I’ve let them all live this long.

Airplane! — the wrong week to quit

Voices day 3

Now,Well – so far this has been easy — my life has led me to quotes for this month – and yesterday it let me to put this in for today …..

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.
— Galileo Galilei

Yesterday I discussed my friend’s posting about Barack Obama and his former pastor. For those that are interested, there is a Chicago Tribune article that discusses that relationship.  (I have a hunch I’m not going to see a ton of clicks on that link).

In Galileo’s time (and even today) there were (and are) those that felt threatened by anything that might go against our preconceived knowledge of Scripture or God or God’s plan.

But here’s the way I look at it — in my short ride on Spaceship Earth, I’ve seen/done the following

  1. Grown an actual human being in my body.  (How bloody cool is that)
  2. Fed the aforementioned human from my own body.
  3. Found my daughter 1/2 way across the world (I think the vast majority of Chinese adoptive parents would tell you that G-d is at work at the China Center for Adoptive Affairs.
  4. And right now, looking out my window, there are pretty little flowers popping their heads out of the ground.

Whether the earth goes around the sun, or the sun goes around the earth, whether the earth is 6 thousand or 6 million or 6 billion years old, and whether humans were put here in current form or evolved from fishes OR whether Douglas Adams had it right and we’re actually descendants of Golgafrinchams it doesn’t seem to me to make any difference.  Because the things that a listed above (and many similar things I didn’t list — and many things that you, too, can list) are still miracles that I am eternally grateful for.  I thank my Creator for flowers, and my kids, and my brain — She does a pretty good job.
